Pho Sa Te - Vietnamese Satay Noodle Soup
Is this Vietnam's answer to laksa?
This dish features flat rice noodles in a flavourful broth enriched with herbs and spices, peanut, coconut milk and Sốt Sa Tế, a Vietnamese chilli oil. It's known for its rich, spicy, and slightly sweet flavour profile.
The origins of Phở Sate are somewhat debated. Some believe it originated in the Teochew region of China and was brought to Vietnam by Chinese immigrants. Other food researchers suggest it may have been influenced by Malay-Chinese cuisine, introduced by the Straits Babas between the 18th and 19th centuries. Another theory is that it was brought to Saigon by Teochew settlers from Cambodia.
Phở Sate is a unique southern Vietnam dish that's especially enjoyed in Saigon's Chinatown (Chợ Lớn) and now you have the opportunity to try it in Sydney at one of Madame Nhu's eateries.
Where to Try Pho Sa Te:
Regardless of its exact origins, one thing is for sure: you won't find this savoury dish in any restaurant in Australia - until now. Madame Nhu introduced this dish to the Australian market in 2024 to celebrate its 17th anniversary. You can find it at any one of our Surry Hills branches.
